Fueling change: the importance of citizen involvement in the discussion on biofuels

On November 8, 2024, the first webinar of the Refolution project was organized in collaboration with Etip Bioenergy and Bio4Fuels Centre, the latter presented by Judit Sandquist (Research Scientist at SINTEF).

The aim of the event, moderated by Silje Fosse HΓ₯konsen (Research Scientist at SINTEF) was to deepen the importance of social acceptance on the topic of biofuels and shed light on the results achieved by VTT and the Center for the Study of Democracy. Social acceptance, which requires social awareness, is in fact fundamental to achieve successful and sustainable business and markets for advanced biofuels.
Nina Wessberg (Principal Scientist at VTT) presented the results achieved so far in the context of the Refolution project through the Responsible Research and Innovation framework. Remina Aleksieva (analyst at the Center for the Study of Democracy) presented the results of the citizen panels carried out in Bulgaria, Italy, Sweden and Austria.

These two analyses showed a significant increase in participants’ awareness of bioenergy and its potential developments, highlighting how direct communication and active involvement can facilitate dialogue between citizens and researchers. The REFOLUTION project aims to unlock the full potential of advanced biofuels production in Europe, improving their profitability, sustainability and social acceptance to facilitate their market adoption. The webinar results reaffirm the importance of integrating citizens’ perspectives for a successful and inclusive energy transition.
